Representation Analysis

                                Representation Analysis

Representation within the media that we consume everyday is so important. You may not realize just how influential the content you view everyday on apps like Tik Tok or on channels like ABC are on your everyday life and your general outlook on everything. Representation has a lot to do with the normalization within society. A couple decades back, you may not have seen many woman in positions of power in movies, TV, or any type of media. Today, it is something a lot more normal and usual.  Including different races and ethnicities in films and having diverse and complete spectrum representation in the media has become something that is seen more and more everyday as we have evolved over time and it almost feels as if the people enforcing this much diverse representation are breaking these "unwritten" rules. This inclusion and diversity helps the average person feel represented in the media.

In the H&M ad, all societal guidelines or rules are broken. A shock factor was used as they showed people of all races, age, and gender wearing exactly the opposite of what society wold perceive as "normal". The older woman wearing more daring clothing and the men wearing "feminine" colors and styles really breaks down societal barriers. The ad includes people of all ages, races, and backgrounds and represents them as just human.

In the Tide ad, they broke down gender roles by showing a little girl dressed in a "masculine" form and enjoying things that are typically known as "masculine". It represented a "tomboy" female and went against the societal gender roles. This amplifies the representation of gender rules and guidelines in society.
